Chapter Sixteen
El took what comfort he could from Remi. It wasnât going to get any better. He knew that, but God, Remiâs arms felt wonderful. Did he want to leave his mom, when she could slip away at any moment? No. But heâd promised her heâd live his life to his fullest. She was sleeping for now, Susie would watch over her and hopefully she still would be sleeping peacefully when he got back.
He didnât plan to spend the night or anything, just take a little time to breathe. This was the calm before the storm.
âLet me finish cleaning up and we can go.â El reluctantly left the warmth Remi offered.
âIâll help. Weâll get done faster. And, you donât have to come over.â Remi rubbed his hands up and down Elâs arms. It was comforting, and he needed as much of that as he could get.
âI promised her. Itâs what she wants. Sheâs happy weâre going to give it a goâreal dating and all. Sheâs worried about leaving me alone.â
âItâs just the two of you?â
El shrugged. âYeah, I donât know my dad. He left when I was little. I have Sara Jo, so I told Mom Iâd be okay.â El moved to the sink and clutched the edge, gripping it so tight that his knuckles turned white. âIâm not going to be okay.â El covered his mouth with his hand to stifle the sob.
âOh, El⦠I wish I could do something for you.â
âYou are. Just you being here helps. I donât know what I would have done if you hadnât been with me tonight.â
âOkay, letâs get this kitchen clean. Why donât I rinse and put everything in the dishwasher? How about you go check on your mom again before we leave?â
El brushed his lips against Remiâs cheek and left him in the kitchen. Remi was so understanding. Heâd guessed that El wouldnât want to leave before he saw his mom one more time. He went to his momâs room. She was asleep, so he wasnât going to disturb her. He looked down at her and listened to her breathing. I shouldnât leave.
He closed his eyes and stood for a moment, not moving, just being in the same room with her in a way he might not be able to for long. It was hardâwaiting for her to pass. On one hand, it would be better for her, but it was going to hurt like a bitch for him. Sure, everyone died, but he thought heâd have more time with her. He was sure everyone felt that way when they lost a parent.
Remi was in the living room waiting for him when he returned.
âYou all ready?â
âYeah, sheâs still sleeping for now. Susie, do you need anything before I leave? Are you sure itâs okay for me to go?â
âNo, weâre good here. I have your number if anything changes. Youâve been at this for months. You need to take care of you as well. Okay? Donât worry about us.â
âI know. Sheâs already
